Purpose:
The purpose of my presentation is to contribute a model of our working Learning Assistance program which has evolved from an entirely peer tutor based model to a peer and professional tutor based model over the course of the last decade. It will include institutional problems that the previous model had and how the current model improves upon it. It is meant to open a dialogue within the Learning Assistance community about professional tutors, by providing this example as a a jumping off point.

Format:
Information provided will include the specific history and problems associated with our previous model, the specific populations our center serves, the specific goals and expectations of our center and institution and how we've gone about solving these problems over the past decade, via powerpoint presentation. With this information in mind, we will open up the floor to questions and dialogue about possibilities for including professional tutor training through CRLA.

Relevance and Audience:
This topic is relevant to learning assistancen managers and higher education administrators who are interested in expanding their tutoring staff or simply finding out about institutions who utilize this model. As a learning assistance manager myself, I'm excited to share our model, but am also interested in being a part of a dialog with others interested or currently utilizing the model. Most presentations for learning assistance managers tend to focus predominately on peer tutor models and I'd like to broaden the discussion.

Knowledge and Experience:
I have been involved in the JSC Learning Center since 1997, since my days as a peer tutor in several academic departments. Post graduation, I served as an administrative assistant and in my current position of Learning Resource Center Coordinator since 2002. I have been working on our professional tutor model over the better part of this decade and have worked with almost a dozen professional tutors to date. I am currently earning my Master's in Education specializing in Curriculum and Instruction.
