2014 Conference Logo & Theme

The 2014 CRLA Conference Theme—The North Star: Navigating Teaching and Learning—takes its cue from the State motto for Minnesota, the North Star State. The North Star itself appears on both the Great Seal of Minnesota and the State flag. Because the North Star is always one degree of true North, and fixed in the heavens, early explorers were able to use it as a compass to guide their journeys as they charted new territories.

As the North Star was to those early explorers, so CRLA is to its members. CRLA’s core mission, which has been its guiding principle for nearly half a century, is to improve student learning. CRLA is a constant and reliable guide to those navigating and exploring new territory in student learning through learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring. CRLA is both a compass and a resource to those seeking direction for their work and the navigational equipment to chart their paths.

CRLA offers access to powerful post-secondary navigational systems to share knowledge assets among members so they in turn can steer people, processes, and technology toward the goal of improved student learning. Knowledge management, for instance, represents a wide range of navigational tools that include information technology (such as learning management systems, institutional portals, and software applications), knowledge portals (e.g., manuals, job aids, subject binders, workshop presentations, or sample worksheets and handouts), soft skills (such as emotional intelligence), experiential knowledge (as acquired through routine tasks), and tacit knowledge (developed from faculty-student interaction, student-to-student engagement, and classroom participation).

Concepts such as knowledge management, with its diverse and multifaceted components, are just some of the navigational strategies for teaching and learning to be discussed, applied, and practiced in the North Star State this November.
