Useful Websites for Learning Assistance Center Managers

Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits (www.mapnp.org/library)

The Management Assistance Program (MAP) provides extensive links and documents on numerous management topics: how to supervise and evaluate staff; how to motivate employees; how to advertise services. The link will take you to a listing of 69 popular topics; you can go from there to the topics or to a more specific list of 675 topics.

Education Organizations & Resources (www.umkc.edu/centers/cad/nade/nademisc/educorg.htm)

Part of NADE's excellent site, this page provides a wonderful listing of relevant sites. The first group of listings is specific to learning assistance; other sets include general education organizations, information on learning communities and cultural diversity, some discipline-specific links, and directories of colleges.

Performance Appraisal (www.performance-appraisal.com/intro.htm)

This site provided by Archer North & Associates is an excellent introduction to the art of evaluation. Included are discussions of methods and benefits, reward issues, dealing with conflict, and common mistakes. Each section is documented; a quick click takes you to the bibliographic entry.

The Best Practices In College Teaching

This site contains a wonderful review of activities, many of which are as relevant for tutors and tutorial settings as they are for the classroom. The sections include such topics as Thoughtful Questions, Rewarding Learner Participation, Goals to Grades Connections, and Fostering Learner Self-Responsibility.

Learning Support Centers in Higher Education (www.pvc.maricopa.edu/~lsche)

Developed by Frank Christ, this site is a definite bookmark for learning center managers. The extensive resources available include sample position descriptions, a list of awards that are available to learning centers and their employees, a calendar of relevant professional meetings and deadlines, and even a list of different names for learning centers. Also included in this is a list of resources which is very useful. (http://www.pvc.maricopa.edu/%7Elsche/resources/websitedir/uswbstdir.html)
