TOM PASTERNACK OUTSTANDING TUTOR AWARD
NOMINATION PROCEDURES

The Tom Pasternack
Outstanding Tutor Award was established by the College Reading and
Learning Association International Tutor Program Certification committee to
honor the late CRLA Newsletter editor, Tom Pasternack, and to reward an
outstanding tutor. The first award of $250 and a plaque were given in 1995
at the Tempe Conference. The Tom Pasternack Outstanding Tutor Award is
presented at the national CRLA conference each fall. We encourage
nominations for the award to be granted on Friday, October 24, 2008, at the
Cleveland, Ohio conference. This is your opportunity to honor a very
special tutor on your staff.
NOMINATION APPLICATION
PROCEDURES:
1. The nominated tutor
must be an undergraduate and certified through a CRLA ITPC-certified
tutor program who has reached the highest level offered by his/her program
as documented by copies of CRLA certificates indicating at which level(s)
the nominee is certified. In addition, the nominee must provide a current
official transcript demonstrating a 3.0 minimum GPA and a letter of
recommendation by a faculty member of the institution.
2. The nominee’s
supervisor must submit the following information on one single-spaced typed
page: (A) Nominee’s name; (B) Tutorial program and college or university;
(C) Level of tutor certification attained by nominee and levels of
certification offered at said institution; (D) A brief response to the
following: 1) Summarize the results of tutor’s evaluations from one or more
of the following sources: students, supervisors, and/or peers; 2) Discuss
the tutor’s ability to help students improve their academic and study
skills; 3) Discuss the tutor’s ability to help students improve
self-esteem. Be sure to include information about his/her promotion of
healthy student interaction, i.e. active learning, emphasis on student
responsibility and ethical behaviors; 4) Discuss the tutor’s ability to
manage responsibilities at school, work, home, etc; 5) Discuss the tutor’s
involvement in special projects, such as serving as a trainer or evaluator
for other tutors, developing material for other tutors or students, or any
other special activities.
3. The nominee must
submit an original essay of at least 250 words and not exceeding 500 words
addressing the topic, “The Role of Tutoring in the Learning Process.”
This original essay must be typed, double-spaced and in standard point and
font. Essays should show insight into the tutoring process while addressing
the
topic.
4. Send only completed

All completed applications must be received by
April 29, 2008. Partial or incomplete applications will not
be considered. Applicants will be notified by mail of receipt of their
application packets.
6. Applications will be reviewed and the
winner chosen by a selected panel made up of members from the College
Reading and Learning Association ITPC committee. Applicants will be
notified by mail of the results. Application materials cannot be returned.
